One of the most beautiful places in Italy

It is one of the most beautiful places to visit in one of the most beautiful areas of Italy, Tuscany. Later, in the 14th century, it was destroyed by the plague and it took years for the city to regain its population and commercial life, like many other places in Europe also affected by this disease.

The Republic of Siena and the rivalry with Florence

Siena became a center for lending money and played an important role in the wool trade. It has an interesting history, it was ruled by the church, by the nobility and by the people and had its own constitution written in 1179. As a republic it achieved a balance between the noble people and the townspeople. It was in part the rivalry with Florence that united the city.

Piazza del Campo

It consists of a fascinating collection of buildings from this era around the impressive Piazza del Campo. This huge space - considered one of the most beautiful in the world - was and still is the center of social activity in the city, much of it is built on top of small hills and the piazza is visible from many points of the city. There is a market and still many sporting events take place here, including the most famous - the annual horse race.

The University of Siena

The University of Siena was founded in 1203 and is famous for its Faculties of Law, Medicine and Humanities and is one of the most important in Italy. Siena was Florence's rival for its art in the 13th and 14th centuries and the mural called 'The Good Government' by Ambrogio Lorenzetti in the wonderful 'Palazzo Pubblic' o (the town hall) is an excellent example of advanced Medieval and early Renaissance art. besides a representation of the utopian vision of the urban society of this time.

It is a beautiful city with a lot of life and we were very impressed on our first visit a few years ago.
