Could eating before and skipping dinner help you control your weight?
We've always heard that skipping meals is not recommended if we want to lose weight, but now a new study suggests that we may be overlooking the potential benefits.
Early feeding with time restriction.
In the new study, the researchers propose that eating for a smaller window of time each day, and skipping dinner, could have a positive health effect.
The effects of fasting and time-restricted eating have been studied and tested on animalsBut research on human subjects is still in its early stages. In animals it seems to reduce fat mass and the risk of chronic disease.
Eleven people were evaluated, with a mean age of 32 years and an average body mass index of 30 (considered obese).
The participants always ate the same number of calories, and only the time until they could eat each day changed. There were two feeding approaches:
• Consumption restricted in time: they ate between 8 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon only.
• A typical meal pattern: ate between 8 in the morning and 8 in the afternoon.
Calories burned, fat burned, and appetite were compared for the two eating patterns.
With the time-restricted eating pattern it appears that increased the amount of fat burned in the afternoons, but not the amount of total fat burned.
Participants they were no longer hungry, despite daily fasting for 18 hours.
The study authors postulate that since the body has an internal clock, and many aspects of metabolism are working better in the morning, eating in line with our internal clock (eating earlier in the day) could help burn fat.
However, it is important to note that study results are still very preliminary, and it's unclear how meal timing can affect overall long-term weight loss.
